Today my thoughts are on Zion. It is God's will for all Christians to dwell in Zion even as God has given us birth in Zion. Zion is a picture of God's people dwelling and fellowshipping in Him. It is called the city of the living God. It is where God can govern through His people who know Him, hear Him and obey Him.
But sadly for most who are called Christians, there may not even be born again (in Zion). And those who are born in Zion are not taught the importance of dwelling in Zion. So we have the church which in God's mind should be Zion missing the mark.
We find in Revelation Chapters 2 and 3, the Lord's mind and the Lord's call to those who have an ear to hear. It is a call for those who have an ear to return to Zion, which is to overcome. So we find that Christians everywhere, whether they belong to a church such as Ephesus or to a church such as Laodicea, have the choice if they are willing to belong to Zion. For the call to overcome is given not only to Philadelphia and Smyrna but to all the seven churches.
The fact is all true Christians are already born in Zion. We only need to continue dwell in Zion. The practical side of dwelling in Zion is to have an ear to hear the voice of our Lord through the Holy Spirit. The call to the overcomer is,"he who has an ear let him hear". We must cultivate the habit to listening to His voice, responding and obeying. This is the fundamental characteristic for those who are dwelling in Zion. Jesus says, "My sheep hears My voice."
Being in Zion is not some exclusive Christian club or denomination. It is what every Christian should be by the grace of God. When we are not in Zion, we have fallen out of God's will for us.
We see many churches who have the name of Zion. Can any particular local church be Zion? I think the answer is no. Even the Philadelphia church in Revelation is not Zion. For there are those who held on to the word who are Zion, and those who did not hold on to the word and lost their crowns.
So what is the responsibility of any local church? It is to brings many sons to glory. That is the evangelizing, the teaching and the discipling of believers to the Lord. It that way the church bring as many who are willing to Zion. Can the church ensure that all its earthly members are of Zion? Clearly no. It is still a choice of the individuals.

The Mystery of doing God's will
A large part of spiritual life is in the mystery of doing God's will. We are reminded that we can't do anything good of ourselves. We often don't really know the truth of this word until we do try to lead the Christian life of ourselves. Then like Paul we have to cry out: "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" (Rom 7:24)
This is not only true individually but corporately as well. Jesus said, I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:5)
On the other hand, God's will is not entirely something external. We must have an interest or a stake in seeing God's will be done. This is just what the Lord taught the disciples in His model prayer.
To sum in up in a verse, "which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:"(Col 1:27). This is the mystery of Christian life, of spiritual life. Not you alone, or God alone. But God in you.

Between the Pharisees and the Sadducee
What our Lord Jesus face when He was on earth with the Pharisees and the Sadducee, and what we face today is largely similar. This makes His warning regarding the yeast of these two groups even more urgent.
Yeast is the external element that is added into a dough to make it lighter and more palatable. But we find that this is not God's idea for the church.
The yeast of the Pharisees points to those who seek to make a palatable religion with outward show. Inevitably this leads to legalism and hypocrisy.
The yeast of the Sadducee points to those who seek to make a palatable religion through human rationalisations. The Sadducee deny resurrection and other teachings from the word of God that does not fit into their limited minds, much like the liberal theologians of today.
What we see today is these two groups politicizing the message of Jesus Christ and the cross. On one hand we see the liberal theologians denying the clear message of the bible including denying the virgin birth, the centrality of the cross, and accepting all kinds of watered down, compromised and worldly teachings. Then on another side we see the so-called Christian right, trying to make political capital out of the Christian message, trying to impose Christian values on a unchristian world.
The central message of the gospel is not that we can change the world, but that we must not be of the world. Even Jesus said as recorded in John 17:9, "I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me;"
So as those given to Jesus Christ, we must keep ourselves clean from the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducee. We must be His little flock. Those whom can hear His voice directly and follow Him only.
This is the narrow path. There is no other way.

About Prayer
Most of us find it difficult to devote ourselves to prayer. We often talk about prayer, speak about prayer, read about prayer but never seem to be able to bring ourselves to pray in any significant way.
There seems to be a real battle, a spiritual conflict over our prayer life both individually and corporately. Actually real prayer is a battle. The fulfillment of the God's kingdom and His will on earth cannot be accomplished without the praying of the saints. That is why the Lord taught His disciples to pray, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
When God created man, He gave man authority over the whole earth. That is why man is so significant. On earth, we have God given authority. That is why even though the devil and all his demons have overwhelming advantage over men in power and intelligence, they cannot remove men from the earth. They have to deceive men with wiles and cunning.
Now the authority not only on earth, but also in heaven is with the new man, Jesus Christ. In Christ, we have this authority and we exercise this authority through prayer. So whatever we bind on earth is bound in heaven and whatever we loose on earth is also loosed in heaven.
So we see how much do depend on the saints being able to pray rightly. The new man in us must pray. But don't get the idea that praying will be an easy task. If it is ceremonial prayer, if it is uttering pleasantries, if it is just routine it may be easy. But if we mean business with God, if we want to pray for His kingdom and His will to be done, we will come into much opposition. But the enemy has no authority to prevent us from praying. Therefore he uses wiles and deceptions to sidetrack us.
In Ephesians chapter 6, the full armour of God is against the wiles of the enemy. It would seem that after putting on the full armour, we are to fight and to move, not just to stand. To withstand the attack and then to stand.
In Ephesians 6:18, right after the metaphor of using the full armour, the apostle Paul launch straight into the context of his message. It is about prayer. As we start praying, it would seem that all the enemy wants to do is to stop us from praying. To get you into some activity, maybe some bible study, maybe some fellowship, maybe the need to help in house work etc. It is all a ruse. You need to stand in prayer. And after withstanding all the inclination to divert, to continue to stand in prayer. Why stand and not kneel? Because we are praying with authority. The authority of Jesus Christ. We are a member of the New Man. All authority in heaven and on earth is given to Him and to us. So let us pray.
Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Knowing according to the flesh
We must remember and be reminded not to take in spiritual things according to the flesh. This kind of pseudo spirituality does not advance the kingdom of God but is in fact an hindrance.
Examples to illustrate this type of mind is when at the garden of Gethsemane the apostle Peter drew his sword to defend the Lord. On surface, it seems a noble act. It was Peter who declared, "even if all forsake you, I will not forsake You". In fact he was willing to fight with the sword, but he was unable take the path of the cross as Jesus did. That is to go through the trial and rejection of the cross.
Then there were the Zebedee brothers, John and James. For the insult that a Samaritan town showed to the Lord, they wanted the Lord to call fire to come down from heaven. Jesus answered them, "You know not what kind of spirit you are of."
We can "understand" the things of God, like Christianity, Church, righteousness, in a fleshly and worldly way and thus miss the spiritual reality altogether. The fleshly mind sees only the outward things. The politics, the money, the success etc. The reality is not like that. It is the Spirit of God in us. It is Christ in us, the hope of glory.
The world will always misunderstand and even altogether ignore the real spiritual reality. It is hidden by God and revealed only to those whom God has given eyes to see and ears to hear.
The world and the worldly think themselves wise. But in the end God judge them foolish. So do not be surprise, those whom have come to know spiritual reality, that the world does not know you. The world thinks you are foolish. The world thinks you are nothing. It is ok. It is a better indication of your faithfulness than if you are widely acclaimed and celebrated.
Let the Lord praise you. Let the Lord commend you. It is a far far better thing.

Our First Allegiance
Our first allegiance is to God. As Christians there is no two ways about it. If it is between God and the whole of humanity our allegiance is still to God. But this does not mean that Christians should a agitators to change society into some sort of pseudo theocracy. In the Muslim world we see that happening in Iran and Afghanistan etc. This road only leads to religious imperialism.
Jesus Christ is King, yet He did not agitate to remove king Herod (whom He called "that fox"). He did not join that sect called the Pharisees who were self styled champions of the Jewish religion, in fact He was their most vocal critic. He even commanded His followers to pay their Roman taxes, a colonial power. Many don't understand His ways then, and many don't understand His ways now.
The fact is that God is God. His powers don't change whether on earth or in heaven. But something did change, at least temporarily. When God created Adam, He gave him dominion over the seen world. He did not take it back. Man still have the dominion over the world. But when Adam disobeyed God, he allowed Satan to have dominion over him. So that now we see the kngdom of man in the nations but we also see the dominion of Satan over this kingdom of man through men.
But now God has given authority to the new man, who is Jesus Christ. he said, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations..." He has all the authority, but His specific command is to go make disciples. So when the priest commanded Peter to not preach, He says that we must obey God not men. For when the higher authority comes the lesser must give way.
The fact is, we have authority to preach the gospel. Whether laws or governments or threats of violence, all must give way to this authority.

There is no political solution
Even though Christians should speak out, we must understand that our goal is not specifically for a political solution. There will not be a Christian utopia on earth until the coming back of our Lord.
Like Enoch, Noah and even Lot, we are to lead a righteous life and to speak the truth in a dark and depraved world. Even the Lord Jesus forewarned us regarding this. If He had been called Beelzebub (a demon), how much more will those who follow Him. You will be hated and reviled and slandered.
I think Christians have been very much protected by the Lord in Singapore. The Lord has indeed put a hedge around us. Perhaps it is like a gardener who puts his young shoots in a nursery to be protected from the elements. In the days ahead I believe the hedge will be lifted. We will be tested. It is all part of maturity. I don't know how much of it is wood, hay and stubble and how much of it will be gold, silver and precious stones.
May the Lord keep His people safe until until His return.

The meaning of our existence
The meaning of life, the supreme truth, the essence of the universe is a Person. This is the fundamental truth of Christianity. The most important command is to love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your mind. This is the reason of our existence. It is what we were created for.
If we do not love God, then all else is in vain. It is altogether worthless (1 Corinthians chapter 13).
God is love. He created us to reciprocate His love. Even when Adam and Eve failed God and sinned, yet God's love remains. In fact, He is able to show His love even more. To the extent that God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to become Man and to die for us. This is the extent of God's love.
To know God's love is to discover not only the meaning for our lives but the meaning of the universe. Love demands a reciprocity. It is evident in our human relationships. God loves us and He wants us to reciprocate His love. To those that refuse to love Him who loves them, who in fact hates the One who created them and loves them there can be no other place for them except in hell.
Hell is the place for those who refuse to love God even though He loves them. It is the place for those who willfully choose to rebel against the love of God.
Do not reject the God who loves you.

Christians speaking up
There is a pressure upon Christians not to speak up in the public space. Let us confine our believes to the closet and within the space of the church premises, they say.
But then we are called to be the salt of the earth and light of the world. So we must speak out the truth for all to hear. Whether they accept it or not is not within our control. But our Lord does not want us to be tasteless (that is to have no effect on others) nor does He want us to hide our light. For it is not His intention that after He has given us light, that we should hide it within the confines of the church or under the bushel. (From Matthew 5:13 to 16)
In another passage from the Bible, the Lord said, what I whisper in your ear, proclaim it from your housetops (Matthew 10:27). This verse is reflected in the title of this blog.
We should proclaim, as He commands us to proclaim. Even if people don't accept what we say, hate us, call us names etc, it is only what the Lord Jesus have fore-warned us in the first place.
So this blog is a place for this proclamation.
May the Lord use it to fulfill His will.

Spirit and Truth
It is a great temptation to look at the externals of Christianity. The number of members in a church, the political influence, the obedience to certain moral and ethical codes, the funds available for programs, etc.
But that is not the heart of Christianity. The heart of Christianity is the heart of a person, and the person is God. If the advantages of this world can convert people to genuine repentance from sin, then Jesus Christ would not need to die on the cross nor need He face the humiliation and shame of a criminal's death. More than that, God will ensure that Christians and churches would have worldly wealth and power beyond measure, if such can convert even a single person unto salvation.
But God hides His wealth and His power. So that men's heart would be revealed. He seeks worshippers who would worship in spirit and in truth. Not just external worship. Not just religious worship. Not just emotional worship.
Worship in spirit is to worship God in His essence. That is to worship Him as a Person. He is a Person. The "I am". The Ultimate Personality. He wants us to appreciate Him as a Person. Not only as Almighty, or omnipotent, or omniscience although He is all of this and more. Therefore we find that God made man in His Own image. Only a spirit can appreciate the Spirit. Only when we know love can we appreciate that God is love. Only when we know holiness can be appreciate God is Holy.
Worship in truth is to worship God in genuineness and reality (not a lie). An example of lie worship is the personality cults that some of the tyrants of this world promote. They make up stories of the heroics and wisdom of these worldly rulers but we know that they are all liars. They give themselves titles, attributes which they actually do not have.
Not so with God. The Son of God really did come down to earth as Jesus Christ. He really love us enough to do that. He really love us enough to let people crucify Him. And God (the Father) really love us enough to join us into His Son, so that in His Son we will have a new life.
And the most important thing is that this is not a fairy tale. It really is true. When we know this truth, this fact, we can worship Him in truth. This is eternal life.
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3

Beware of Aware
What a big fuss over the leadership of Aware. Who is making the fuss? Of course those who found themselves uncomfortably ousted from their comfortable seats on the Aware board. I think it is perfectly understandable. The shock, the hurt, and the humiliation!
Even so, I think there is more to it than that. The media seems to be enjoying playing up this story. I don't know if there is any hidden agenda. Maybe it is all about selling more newspapers.
May be it is the Gay lobby in Singapore. An alternative lifestyle coalition. There seems to be a concerted push to move society in this direction. I think a lot of Christians are asleep over this. I was not alert to the dangers of the Aware program with the schools until it was mentioned in the newspapers. So I thank the new Aware Board for bringing attention to this. I will definitely be more alert when it comes to letting my daughters attend the school's "sexuality education program" or whatever they call it now.
Finally, I think a point has been made. The wolf in sheep's clothing has been revealed. We were also too complacent in allowing the schools to "educate" our children without a second thought. As parents, we should free our time to look into this matter. I think the schools involved should also be accountable on this matter.

Anniversary
Today is a special day. It has been ten years since my second daughter, Denise was born. Not only is today a birthday celebration but it also commemorates the day my wife went into a coma from meningitis.
On this day ten years back, I could have lost both my wife and my second child. But God, merciful and gracious decided to preserve them.
So, this first posting, I together with my family want to give thanks to God, For His love and intervention.
